Most striking is the collections inscription: to the kid with the Mohawk in the airport in Tucson. Thats a story Pugsley could tell, but not in a monologue. But however you admire Pugsleys skill at presenting the film world, it is just a little too distant from everyday experience to sustain interest. The showbiz stories have some genuine moments, as in the betrayal in the name of ambition you see in Turnaround.
The ending is carefully wrought Pugsley leaves it open as the guys part on an ambiguous note. There is a disturbing feel to the story, but also a recognition of heated conversations everyone has had over deeply personal matters. While Grace, the girls mother, is mentioned, she doesnt appear but the story, showing how she dominates the whole tone of their conversation. You get a taste of emotion in the dialogue in Grace, where two men, one young and one somewhat older, wrangle over the youngers bitterness towards his former girlfriend. One wants a story as emotional as those Pugsley is capable of delivering, but imagery and character dont survive what is ultimately email babble. One can accept the premise of first a cyber, then physical, coming together of a couple leading to a cyber break up, but perhaps the email world just doesnt have much resonance. However, theres a great difference between the ordinary becoming extraordinary, as shown in the best stories mentioned, and not reduced to the trivial. Ordinary Love Song is an ambitious attempt at a contemporary epistolary tale in the form of emails rather than letters.
Her story is heartfelt but not quite convincing the readers sympathy comes to border impatience. The same can be said for a more interesting monologue, 20 Herring Cove, in which a rattled, fearful girl corners a couple on a long bus trip, telling them of her painful existence. Clichés are close, although Pugsley shows enough discipline to keep them at a distance as presented, however, Legion seems overlong, though it shouldnt. Take Legion, in which a vet rambles for the most part leading to his story of a now-dead, tormented, beloved brother and how it haunts him even now.
